Vincent Lorant is a sociologist, political scientist and economist. He presented his Phd in Public Health in 2002, "Inequalities and inequities in mental health and care". He is currently full professor of medical sociology and health policies at UCLouvain. His research is related to inequalities in mental health and in adolescents' health. Over the last decade, he has been applying social network models to investigate health behaviour inequalities or the dissemination of health care competence. Mental health is an important domain, accounting for 25% of the burden of diseases, worldwide. The talk will review the different ways to define mental health, the main determinants of mental health, the help-seeking patterns and the different target groups. The talk will address recent changes in mental health policies in Europe.
Stefan T. Mol is an assistant professor in Organizational Behavior and Research Methods at the Amsterdam Business School of the University of Amsterdam and co-founder and chair of the Scilink foundation, a non-proft organization focused on researcher transversal skills training. He received his Master's degree in psychology at the University of Amsterdam in 2000, and his PhD in psychology in 2007, at the Institute of Psychology of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Stefan has (co-)authored over 25 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on topics such as career shocks, refugee integration, learning analytics, text mining, recommendation of open educational resources, person-environment fit, and researcher mental health. In addition, Stefan is involved in a number of EU funded projects focused on optimizing the match between individual education and the labor market and researcher mental health. During his talk, Stefan will talk about the state of mental health in academia, a number of manifesto's he collaborated on, and present the Sustainable Working Conditions in Academia Survey (STAIRCASE), a Researcher Mental Health Observatory (ReMO) Cost Action project focused on creating the largest ever European Benchmark (across 30+ countries) of (the contextual antecedents of) Mental Health.
A participatory workshop to raise awareness of mental health issues in the academic environment from the perspective of philosophy and psycho-social risks. Anne Staquet, a philosopher at the University of Mons, will offer her perspective on the abnormality of mental "problems", as well as her advice as a therapist, and Zoé Thielens, head of the Psychosocial Risks Unit at UNamur, will present the preliminary results of a survey of UNamur doctoral students on psychosocial risks, as an introduction to a small-group sharing of ideas.
Researchers' mental health cannot be treated without taking into account the real (material but also subjective) conditions in which they work. There can be no quality research without healthy researchers. We will unfold these ideas and their consequences in a presentation, followed by a time of exchange with participants.
